Get Your Child Ready For The New School Year

School board and books

We’re halfway through the summer holidays so now is the perfect time to start thinking about those important back to school essentials. Here are some key items to remember and some top tips on preparing for the new school year.

It’s good to begin by checking any information that has already been provided by your child’s school or nursery. You may have been given a letter containing everything you need to know, and some schools now have online portals where essential information can be accessed. These will usually have information on any events or school trips taking palace during the first weeks back, school policies and items that the school will provide. It is also a good idea to ensure that your child has had any relevant health checks and that any required paperwork is completed.

Now let’s talk about those key items. First is clothing and accessories. School uniforms can vary depending on the school that your child attends. The key items consist of trousers, skirts, polo shirts, shirts, blouses, jumpers, blazers and ties. Together with socks, comfortable shoes and a waterproof jacket or coat your school uniform is complete. To accompany this, your child will need a suitable PE kit and a rucksack/bag containing a lunch box and drinks bottle. Smaller children attending nursery are likely to need a change of clothing and using name labels or marking clothing with wash proof markers is also recommended.

Next are school supplies. Required items will depend on the age of your child. A pencil case is a good item to start with. You can then fill the case with pens and pencils, a ruler, rubber, pencil sharpener, child safe scissors and a glue stick. Additional items could include a notebook, calculator, tissues/hand wipes and spare hair clips or bobbles. It is also important that your child has spare money for their lunch or bus fare and a document containing their home address and any relevant contact numbers.

Before the new school year, it is a good idea to get your child back into a routine in advance. It is also a good idea to plan out breakfasts, lunches and snacks to ensure that every morning before school runs smoothly. Remember, the more organised you are, the better prepared your child will be for the first day of school. Take a look at our back to school essentials.
