Rear-facing car seat safety from Axkid

Buying the perfect car seat for your child can often be an overwhelming experience. There are many car seats to choose from, and here child car seat specialist Axkid offers some guidance to help make the car seat buying experience easier and simpler.

One important consideration is the percentile of your baby’s growth and development. Why is this so important? Well, it is relevant here because it will help determine at what age your child will reach a certain height and weight limit. It is important to understand this when choosing your next stage car seat.

Whether the car seat will need to be moved around frequently is another consideration you should take into account. It is essential that child car seats are installed correctly and therefore if your child’s car seat is likely to be moved between cars regularly, this is something that needs to be considered when selecting a seat.

At Axkid, we recommend that children remain rear-facing for as long as possible. We have a range of rear-facing seats to suit different needs, and here’s more information about them:

Axkid Modukid i-Size

Axkid Modukid is approved to R129 (or i-Size) for toddlers, 61-105 cm and up to 18 kg (approximately the size of a four-year-old child on the 50th percentile). Meeting the i-Size approval, a legal requirement for height-based seats, Modukid is the ideal solution for parents on the go and needing a car seat that can be installed quickly and safely.

The functionality of the six adjusting positions on the Axkid Modukid’s base makes sure that your child remains comfortable as they continue to grow. The seat effectively grows with them, as you can choose between compact installation for the small child and extended legroom for the larger child which allows for a comfortable seating position regardless of age. As you can choose between compact installation or extended, the car seat system fits in both large and smaller cars.

The seat’s headrest and internal harness is a unique feature which automatically adjusts according to the child’s height and size when you pull the harness tight.

The Axkid Modukid’s ISOFIX connectors are integrated with safety colour indicators and a sounding safety system for the support leg, just to let you know that it’s correctly fitted. If you’re moving the seat regularly between cars, this can be a reassuring feature.

Axkid Minikid

Axkid Minikid is approved for children of up to 25 kg (approximately 125 cm, typical for children of around six years). The self-tightening tether straps help to make the installation smooth when the car seat is wiggled in place. This means that if you’re moving the seat between different cars, the Axkid Minikid makes an excellent choice.

In addition, and as with the Modukid seat, the Minikid also comes equipped with a headrest and an internal harness which automatically adjusts according to the child’s length and size when you pull the harness.

Axkid Minikid is Swedish Plus test approved up to 25 kg, received the “Good Choice 2019” award by Folksam, “Best Cost Value” by Best-in-Test.se and is Rollover approved by VCA making this an excellent safety choice seat.

The rear-facing Axkid Minikid car seat has been designed to provide the best possible safety and comfort for children whatever their height and size, enabling your child to travel rear-facing (which is the safest option) for as long as possible. The Minikid most recently saved the life of 18-month-old Albie, leaving him unharmed. Check out blog post here.

Axkid Move

Axkid Move is a rear-facing car seat that’s perfect for those looking for an affordable and safe solution. This seat allows children of up to 25kg to travel rear-facing and is easily installed with the vehicle’s three-point belt. The Axkid Move seat takes up very little space in the car, so you can install it without difficulty in both small and large cars.

The recline can be adjusted in two different positions and the headrest has three fixed positions, all helping to ensure that the child is as safe and comfortable as possible. If additional recline is needed, the seat’s angle adjusting wedge can help to supply it.

Axkid Move is approved for children weighing between 9-25 kg and has received very good reviews from several independent test institutes. The car seat has passed the Swedish Plus Test up to 25 kg, awarded with “Good Choice 2019” award by Folksam and is Rollover approved by VCA. No compromise is made on safety with the Axkid Move.

All Axkid car seats (Modukid, Minikid and Move) come equipped with ASIP technology – to give it its full name, Axkid Side Impact Protection. ASIP has been developed together with a recognised crash institute in Germany, and is specifically designed to provide the best possible protection for the child in the event of a side impact collision.

Before buying a car seat, there are two key points that Axkid would recommend you bear in mind:

  • Check your child’s percentile by checking their weight and height. Follow their percentile to establish roughly what weight and height they will be at the age of four years.
  • If your child is over the 50th percentile for weight or height, buy a rear-facing car seat of up to 25kg. It is also the most economical choice of car seat and the one that is likely to last your child all the way to when they reach high-back booster age. Axkid recommends seating your child rear-facing for as long as possible, and to switch to a high back booster only when your child’s car seat is fully outgrown (when the max height or weight has been reached).
